Movement Meets
Movement Meets is a dance and movement workshop series that empowers community members who share challenging life experiences, such as substance use disorders, housing and food insecurity, and physical and mental disabilities, to use dance to find their physical and emotional voices. Participants draw from the power of movement through styles such as freestyle, contemporary, and street dance to communicate, connect, and empathize---and “meet” their challenge to find healing.
Program workshops are offered in partnership with Boston area community organizations and are tailored to a range of locations such as shelters, hospitals, and community centers. Through one-hour single pop-up sessions and weekly classes, its customized curriculum addresses the physical and emotional impacts of the shared group experience. Urbanity Dance selects a Teaching Artist for each program who is personally connected to the challenge and invests in their Adaptive or Inclusive Dancemaking and trauma-informed teaching training.
In 2024, Movement Meets is slated to serve approximately 50 participants through eleven community partnerships:
Boston Community Pediatrics
Boston Combined Residency Program at Boston Children’s Hospital
Partners for Youth with Disabilities
Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital Boston
McLean Hospital
Victory Programs
Delta Projects
Pine Street Inn
